An alternative forum to Sammyboy on moving to JB

Standard

Received a cute email the other day letting me know that there is a new kid on the block in terms of forums on moving to JB. Thought I’d just put it up here in case some of you guys don’t know about it’s existence yet.

It’s pretty interesting, and I must say, provides quite alot of very useful information – there’s even a thread on carpooling! How cool is that? 🙂

Think a large number of contributors are originally from the Sammyboy thread…so, the discussions should be quite lively. 😀

  1. Apart from Sammyboy, I am always wary of straying to newly set up forums because they either:

    (a) always start off being innocent and genuine and all of us migrate there to participate and share and post, and then once they get all the traffic and posts, the owner changes or reveals his true intention and make it into a money making enterprise. Same with some societies, country club cliques in Singapore.

    Singapore examples include:
    http://www.hardwarezone.com
    http://www.bmw-sg.com

In this case, the owner seems to be “Teck” but we don’t know any more than that.

    (b) suddenly shut down when the forum owner has a change of heart, lost interest or whatever.

    Singapore examples include:
    http://www.temasekreview.com
    http://www.wallstraits.com
    http://www.frontallabs.com

That’s why I’ll just stick to Sammyboy (which I’ve been using since 1996), Facebook or blogs like yours.

    • that’s a good point you raised Nic. Never thought of it that way. Hopefully, the forum doesnt go that way and won’t charge users.

But to give the devil it’s due, the iskandarliving forum really does consolidate alot of the info and makes it much easier to find out about living in JB. Been to the sammyboy forum a few times but am not a regular there…super hard to keep track of the discussion threads! Or, maybe it’s just me…LOL. 😛

  2. And there are many ways of monetizing a forum, many of which require neither unscrupulous behaviour nor the extraction of revenue from members. 🙂
